COX'S BAZAR, May 23: Cox's Bazar beach, the longest natural sea beach in the world with a length of 120 kilometres, is now filled with trash, causing inconvenience to tourists.
Parts of the beach, which is the top tourist spot in Bangladesh, are littered with piles of trash. The situation is very bad at three popular beach points including Laboni, Kalatali and Sugandha.
Mohammad Sifat, a beach cleaner, said, "A large number of tourists are responsible for this. While enjoying, they just throw away whatever they have in their hands."
"Some hotels and restaurants also litter the beach inconsiderately," he added.
Saeed Anwar and Sadeq Mahmud Shimran, law students of Cox's Bazar International University, said that stray animals like cows and dogs had been spotted on popular points of the beach.
Tourist couple Ahsan Habib and Shahina Yasmin from Dhaka's Mohammadpur said that they had visited the spot several times.
But this time their trip has been marred by piles of trash including plastic waste on the beach and bad smell.
Nahida Sultana, another tourist from Rajshahi, said, "This is my first visit to Cox's Bazar. I have been enjoying a lot here. But garbage and stray dogs are causing a little problem."
Md Mamunur Rashid, Chairman of the Beach Management Committee and Deputy Commissioner, said, "We have enough staff to clean the beach garbage."
"Beach crews are instructed to keep it clean and tidy every day," he added.
