Cox\\\'s Bazar transport strike withdrawn
Sunday, 23 November 2014
Cox's Bazar transport workers have lifted the strike they called after a mobile court recently penalised transport workers in the town. Long-route buses have been operating since Saturday evening, after almost a 3-day halt. Transport owners and workers withdrew the strike after a meeting with deputy inspector general of police and the deputy commissioner in Cox’s Bazar, said Mohammad Musa, president of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation in Chittagong. But the meeting failed to resolve the issue surrounding the punishment meted out to workers by the mobile court, he said. ‘There will be another meeting in the DIG’s office on Sunday afternoon. We’ll discuss it then.’ Saudia Paribahan Counter Manager Ruhul Amin and Shah Amin Paribahan’s Manager Alauddin were sentenced to 5 days in prison while Shamalima Paribahan Manager Ali Ahsan got 6 days and one of its driver Mohammad Russel got three months of jail term on Thursday noon. Counter managers stopped selling tickets of long-route buses from 4:00pm that day, according to a news agency.
