CHATTOGRAM, Sept 27: Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) dismissed a total of 119 doctors, nurses, midwives and other temporary staffs of the Port Hospital who were appointed during the corona outbreak on June 23, 2020.
Disappointed by such decision of the CPA the corona fighters formed a human chain and staged demonstration on the Chattogram Press Club Premises on Tuesday morning.
Wearing Personal Protective Equipment, more than a hundred corona fighters of the hospital who lost their job took part in the demonstration.
Anisul Hoque, a ward boy of the port hospital, said, "When the regular employees of the hospital denied to take care of the corona patients we took up the responsibility with the risk of our lives."
"In the process of nursing the corona patients many of us and our family members got infected with corona virus," he said, adding that one of his colleagues, mother died of corona as he went home after being infected.
Liton, another demonstrator and nurse of the hospital, said, "Despite being deprived of all kinds of facilities we served the corona patients. Even when there was no patients in corona ward we had to work."
He said, "Instead of accommodating us in the vacant posts the authority is planning to hire people through an influential contractor."
Manik, a cleaner who took part in the demonstration, alleged that the CPA sacked them with only 5 days notice which is inhumane.
On June 23, 2020, the CPA appointed 119 people in various positions to serve the corona patients.
