Chittagong port set a record by handling a million containers in 2007-08 fiscal year following substantial rise in international trade through containers.
"This is history for our port. We are happy for being able to handle such a large number of containers," said Hadi Hossain Babul, member (planning and administration).
It handled a total of 1.027 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) containers in 2007-08 fiscal against 913,704 TEUs in 2006-07 registering a growth of 12.48 per cent.
Of the total quantity handled during 2007-08, 517,510 TEUs were import containers and 510,235 export containers.
In the previous fiscal, the number of import containers handled were 458,542 TEUs and 455,162 export containers.
The port handled a total of 32.023 million cargoes including bulk itmes during 2007-08 fiscal. Off them, import cargo was 25.34 million and export was approximately 6.7 million.
The growth of the cargo handling was 5.71 per cent over the same period in 2006-07. The port handled a total of 30.2 million cargoes including bulk cargoes in 2006-07.
Imported goods first arrived in containers in the port in 1977 along with break-bulk cargoes from Singapore.
But, full dedicated containers vessels started to arrive in early 1980s and it got momentum in 1990s.
There are currently 11 dedicated berths for the container carrying feeder vessels, three at the Chittagong Container Terminal, six at the GCBs (general cargo berths) and two at the NCT.
