CHITTAGONG, Mar 18: Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has salvaged a goods-loaded container that slipped from a vessel and fell into the Karnaphuli River following an accident in the port jetty.
In the accident, three other containers of the cargo vessel were partly damaged, sources at the CPA said.
The CPA has constituted a three-member committee to ascertain the extent of damage caused to the containers in the incident.
Sources said a Panama-registered vessel of Chinese shipping line MV Shin Fu Song left Jetty no 5 of New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of Chittagong Port for Mongla Port with cargo-laden containers at around 11:00am on Friday.
As the freighter was moving towards Jetty no 4 of the NCT it collided with another foreign-registered vessel, MV Marine Dia. One of the containers of the cargo-laden ship fell in the Karnaphuli River while its three other containers were partly damaged, sources said. The container slowly sank in the river.
After a few hours, the CPA managed to lift the sunken container out of the river. It also constituted a three-member committee with Terminal Manager Sarwar Alam as its head and asked the committee to submit its findings shortly.
