CPA to appoint new operator at Kamalapur ICD

Sunday, 26 February 2012

FE Report
The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has taken a move to appoint a new operator at its key terminal at Kamalapur Inland Container Depot (ICD) to facilitate containerised cargo movement.
Currently, CPA is operating the terminal which handles nearly 8.0 per cent of Chittagong port's total handling.
The contract period of the previously appointed operator -- Gatco -- expired on January 31 last.
"We've prepared tender documents to appoint the new operator and we'll float tender shortly," said a senior port official.
He said the intended operators must have experiences in handling 250,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) over the last 10 years at any port in Bangladesh.
He also said the new operator must install state-of-the-art equipment to ensure smooth operation of cargoes at the terminal.
The port official said they want to appoint the operator for a period of 10 years.
He said they should have floated the tender much earlier but it was delayed due to complexities relating to finalisation of the agreement with the Bangladesh Railway (BR).
The ICD, built on 33 acres of railway land by CPA, is being operated under an agreement with the BR.
The Dhaka ICD, which began operation in 1987, handles more than 90,000 import-export containers a year.
