FE Report
Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan Sunday said the government will not consider railway's plea to operate the country's largest inland container depot (ICD) in Dhaka. He said Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), the existing operator of the state-owned ICD, will continue to operate it. The shipping minister made the above remarks while visiting the ICD in the city on the day. "The Chittagong Port is operating the ICD efficiently and the agreement with Bangladesh Railway (BR) which expired in December last year will be renewed," the minister added. The CPA is operating the ICD, built on 33 acres of railway land, under a 15-year agreement with the BR which expired on December 31, 2010. Currently, the CPA is operating the ICD following a verbal instruction of the ministry. Mr Khan said the government will procure equipment to enhance the capacity of the ICD. The BR in August, 2010 wanted to operate the ICD from January, 2011 insisting that such a move will help reduce the railway losses.
