Crackdown continues: 548 more arrested
Monday, 2 June 2008
Joint forces continued a hunt for the local leaders of different political parties for a second day with at least 548 people arrested in seven districts until Sunday afternoon, report agencies.
Earlier, the crackdown rounded up 44 in Kishoreganj, 22 in Magura, 16 in Bogra, 14 in Faridpur, eight in Chandpur, three in Brahmanbaria, and one in Rangpur.
The government however described the countrywide crackdown that began Friday night as a "drive to prevent spiraling crimes."
Local leaders of Awami League, BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Jatiyo Party, and some union parishad (UP) chairmen with political links were among the people arrested since Saturday night.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police and intelligent agencies also arrested 140 people in the city in an anti-crime crackdown.
In Narayanganj, Bangladesh Hosiery Association president Badiuzzaman Bodu was among 34 persons arrested from different parts of the district early Sunday.
Joint-force sources said they arrested Bodu and Monir Khan, uncle of "top-terror" Zakir Khan, from the association's community centre in Salimullah Road in the town at about 2am under the Special Powers Act. The association was declaring its election results when the joint forces raided the centre and made the arrests.
Meanwhile, the home ministry said the law-enforcers arrested 548 in 24-hours. In a statement, the home ministry Sunday said the drive had been launched on reports that criminal acts peaked in the country.
