Create awareness about earthquake

Monday, 4 December 2023

Bangladesh lies in an active earthquake zone. A recent 5.5 magnitude earthquake at a depth of 10 kilometre that jolted Dhaka city has proved that again. It is true that no major casualty was reported from the quake but a number of buildings reportedly developed cracks. Experts have warned us that the series of light quakes could be the sign of a major quake. But are we prepared enough to face such a natural disaster? It seems whenever there is an incident of quake, we become aware of it for some days. Then, as usual, we forget it entirely. In 2022, Dhaka, the capital of the country, with 30,093 residents per square kilometre was ranked among cities with the highest population density in the world, and has been marked as one of the 20 cities most vulnerable to earthquakes in the world. Already, several countries in the world have experienced massive damage due to earthquakes. Many buildings were destroyed, and thousands of people lost their lives. According to experts, there is a danger of earthquake damage in Bangladesh as well. Unfortunately, it is unpredictable. So, we need to take all-out preparations before a more severe earthquake strikes us.
Earthquakes are caused by several factors, including unplanned urbanisation, groundwater extraction, increased carbon dioxide, the construction of dams, deforestation, the transfer of geothermal energy, and climate change. Everyone should know what to do immediately during an earthquake. Generally, during an earthquake, we should try to get out in the open without panicking. Of course, it is important to disconnect the electricity and gas connection at this time. Also, building codes must be followed for construction. Finally, the government should make short-term and long-term plans to minimise the damage a major earthquake can cause.
