Creation of nat'l body suggested to work for benefit of WWD

FE Report | Wednesday, 2 July 2008

A study report has suggested creation of a national organisation of the women with disabilities (WWD) to advocate and work for the benefit and interest specifically of the WWD in the national and international arena.

"The main focus of such an organisation should be empowerment of the WWD and promotion of their rights. For sustainability such national organisation should maintain transparency, ensure accountability and develop strategic network, capacity and needs to be a member driven and not donor-driven organisation," Professor Akter Hussain of Dhaka University said while presenting the report on Women with Disabilities in Bangladesh at a programme Tuesday.

Social Assistance and Rehabilitation for the Physically Vulnerable (SARPV) organised the programme for report presentation and national leadership training for women with disabilities at the BIAM auditorium.

Ms Nirjharinee Hasan, fund coordinator of Canadian High Commission, attended the programme as the chief guest while director of national forum of organisations working with disabilities Nafeesur Rahman, Disability Theme of ActionAid manager Mahbub Kabir, Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) director Rina Roy were present as special guests.

Chief Executive of SARPV Shahidul Haque gave vote of thanks while Farzana Taleb delivered welcome address.

In the report, Akter Hussain said for improving the situation of the WWD, more proactive actions should be taken to ensure their increased access to education, health and employment by close monitoring of compliance of the fulfillment of already existing quota granted for them.

For mass awareness development on the issues and rights of the disabled, the media should play a much more affirmative role, he said adding that for this purpose, the organisations, both government and non government, working in the area of disability should network and enter into a social responsibility partnership with print and electronic media to project life, livelihood, constraints and prospects of the WWID for the awareness development of the general mass.

"Organisations working for the benefit of the disabled should be networked to develop a common advocacy strategy and programme for the establishment of rights and policy change in favour of the disabled. This will be more forceful in exerting pressure and intensify the movement for policy change," Akter Hussain added.

Twenty-five disabled women from Dinajpur, Cox's Bazar, Bagerhat, Gazipur and Dhaka are participating in the 5-day national leadership training for women with disabilities workshop.
