CUMILLA, Aug 24: Thousands of families under Barura upazila in the district have attained financial solvency by growing creeper arum on commercial basis.
A good number of locals said creeper arum cultivation has been playing a vital role in poverty alleviation in the area. Many youths have become self-reliant by growing the popular vegetable on a vast tract of land.
Some growers said creeper arum is being exported to seven countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Malaysia.
At least 50 to 60 tonnes of arum are sent to various countries every month from upazila, they added.
Farmer Ibrahim of Bataichari village said, "I have attained financial solvency by growing the item. I grow creeper arum on our land and sell it to the local market."
Many traders from Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet visit the area to purchase the vegetable from the farmers directly, he added
District DAE office sources said creeper arum farming is expanding in the area for high profit.
Easy production procedure, low farming cost and high demand encourage the cultivators to increase its production, DAE officials added.
