Creeping plant of Arum cultivation increases in northern region

NILPHAMARI, June 03: Cultivation of the creeper Arum (Loti Kachu) is increasing in the northern region.
Now it is being very extensively cultivated as a commercial product in Panchbibi Upazila of Jaipurhat district and other neighbouring upazilas of Dinajpur district.
Loti kachu is profitable because it grows in uncultivable low land as well as in the homestead of poor farmers. Cultivators applying tissue culture technology and also plant saplings.
In a 30 decimal land, 2600 to 3000 saplings are planted and become harvestable within three months. Generally a 30 decimal land yields ten maund loti kachu in a week and is re harvestable in less than a week as it is harvested 5 to 6 times a month for six months. Its current wholesale price is Tk 750-800 a maund. Everyday, truckloads of the vegetable go to various destinations in the country.
The high protein vegetable is consumed by the city residents of Dhaka, Khulna and Rajshahi and it is also exported to the Middle East, Europe and America.
