Crenshaw melon cultivation gaining popularity in Natore

NATORE, June 11: Farming of Crenshaw Melon, a yellowish cantaloupe variety, has brought financial solvency to hundreds of farmers in the district.
According to Natore Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Crenshaw melon cultivation is gaining popularity among the farmers in Lalpur, Boraigram, Shingra and Sadar upazilas in the district.
If farmers ensure proper farming method, they can harvest 12 tonnes to 15 tonnes of fresh melon from a hectare of land, said DAE officials.
The variety can be produced round the year except two months in winter. Cultivators can harvest juicy fruit after 60 to 65 days of sowing seeds.
Every two or three kg of melon is selling at Tk 20 to Tk 30 in retail price.
Farmer Abul Hossain of Boraigram upazila said melon production is satisfactory in the season and price is also good. He is expecting to make a profit of Tk 20,000 from the fruit produced on his a bigha of land.
Deputy Director of DAE Rafiqul Islam said peasants of the district are happy as they got a plenteous yield of the item.
"Cultivation of the melon variety should be expanded across the country", the official added.
