Crimes against journalists
Thursday, 6 November 2014
On November 02, the world observed the International Day to End Impunity for Crime against Journalists. The free press is very essential for a democratic country and if the crimes against journalists do not end, then it will deter flourishing of free journalism in our country.
The people of our country have not forgotten the brutal murders of journalist couple Sagar-Runi nor will they forget in the future. We should create a safe environment for journalism so that they are not afraid to seek and expose truth without being scared of reprisal and backlash.
The journalist community of our country should be united so as to face the vested quarters that are afraid of truth and want to suffocate it. Without a free press, there would be no democracy. We must safeguard it for the sake of democracy and other good values which are intertwined with democracy.
To protect people's power, we need to strengthen free press and without ensuring the safety of journalists we cannot ensure that. If we want our society to be powerful, enlightened and well informed, we have to protect our press from all types of intimidation and harassment. Only then, we can only expect our press to work freely without any fear.
