Criminal held with pistol in city

Bravery of a 23-year-old college student helped the arrest of a criminal who was running away by spraying bullets on the chasers at West Monipur in the capital Thursday, police said.
Walid Ibne Siddique alias Shawon, a second year student of the Marketing Department of Tejgaon College and son of Siddiqur Rahman of Mollapara in Mirpur, also sustained bullet wounds as he joined in the chase to nab the armed criminals, witnesses said.
"Shawon fell down on the ground just after capturing one of the criminals as a bullet struck his throat," one of his friends, who was playing cricket at a nearby field, told reporters.
They rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Later, the police team arrested Sohel (22) and recovered a USA-made pistol used in the shooting but failed to apprehend others as they managed to flee the spot.
Mirpur police said they raided the area after being informed that three local criminals were gathering there for committing crimes at about 12:30pm and started chasing the trio who opened fire for their safe escape, leaving Shawon wounded.
Officer-in-Charge of the police station Zakir Hossain told the FE the illegal arms holders started firing on the chasers when Shawon tried to assist the policemen nab the fleeing criminals.
