FE Report
A close accomplice of notorious Jissan was killed in a shootout between RAB and a group of criminals at Rampura in the city early Thursday, the police said.
An officer of Rampura police station said Kamrul Islam alias Miah Bhai, a member of the terrorist gang, was wanted in a number of criminal cases, including murder. His body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
An officer of RAB-1 unit told the FE that a team from the unit conducted a drive at an under-construction building of Aftab Tower at about 3:00am after being informed that members of the gang were assembling there.
When the RAB team reached there, the criminals opened fire on the law enforcers forcing them to retaliate.
"Kamrul was caught in the gunfire and died on the spot while he was trying to escape," he said.
Two firearms and three rounds of ammunition were also recovered from the spot.
The RAB official said they arrested another cohort of the gang, Masud, soon after the shooting but failed to apprehend others as they managed to escape.
Meanwhile, a newspaper employee was wounded when unidentified gunmen shot at him at his office in the early hours.
The gunmen stormed into the office of the daily Fulki in Saranika residential area and shot at Hasan Chowdhury, computer-in-charge of the daily, while he was sleeping there after finishing sehri, leaving him seriously injured.
Critically injured Hasan was rushed to the DMCH for treatment.
