Criminals setting fire to train must face justice

Sunday, 7 January 2024

The arson attack on Benapole Express train which led to the death of at least four passengers, including three members of a family, is an appalling act of crime. Locals were terrified to see four carriages of the train from Jashore's Benapole on fire during its entry to the capital through Sayedabad. The driver stopped the train at Gopibagh, some two kilometres from its destination, the Kamalapur Railway Station. By all indications, it appears to be an act of sabotage. The fact that there was reportedly no fire outside the train suggests that the fire did not originate from the train's wheels. Primary investigation also suggests that it was not possible for the fire to spread so quickly without the use of petrol, indicating that it was an arson attack.
Whoever was responsible had set the train on fire while it was running. That makes it clear that they wanted to cause maximum damage. Such a heinous act must be investigated thoroughly and the perpetrators must be held to account. We call on our law enforcing agencies to carry out an independent investigation to identify who exactly was responsible for these terrible train attacks and to remain vigilant to prevent any further acts of sabotage.
