Crisis and women

Saturday, 16 January 2010

WOMEN and girls suffer in crisis situations all over the world. They are given unsafe jobs. They are the first to lose jobs. They become victims of trafficking. They are denied internationally recognised reproductive rights. The grants and assistance for grassroots women is much less. The maternal and child health care allocations are slashed first whenever a government opts for austerity. Gender mainstreaming programmes social services also become easy casualties. Women as well as girls suffer unnoticed in social and domestic violence caused by poverty.
More women were marginalised due to globalisation.
Shortage of food, safe water, and shelter resulting from the global economic crisis affected women and girls more because of inherent social inequity. Their access to education and livelihood also suffered setbacks.
