Crisis management cell in Ctg to address garments problems

CHITTAGONG, June 08 : A crisis management cell would be formed in Chittagong as that of Dhaka for resolving the problems persisting in the garments industries in this region.
A decission to that effect was made at a view exchange meeting arranged by the joint forces in the Circuit House of the port city recently. Divisional Commissioner Md Mukhlesur Rahman persided over the meeting while senior officials of the joint forces, Director General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), BGMEA leaders and garments owners, senior officials of the concerned agencies and Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) President Saifuzzaman Chowdhury were present on the occasion.
The cell is likely to be formed involving the concerned agencies including the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
It was also proposed at the meeting to make the commercial wings of the Bangladeshi embassies abroad more effective to create fresh markets of the garments industry apart from the United States and the European Union (EU) countries.
In his speech, the BGMEA First Vice-President MA Salam highlighted the problems persisting in the readymade garments (RMG) sector and its prospects. He said garments industry of the country are now passing through a critical juncture. Due to political unrest before the state of emergency, many buyers switched over to other countries, and as a result volume of order has been reduced by 20 per cent as compared to the previous year.
Under the circumstances, Salam called for constituting the crisis management cell and urged the banking institutions to undertake initiatives for providing with current capital for rescuing the garments sector from its present crisis.
Extending his support to the proposals raised by the RMG owners, Divisional Commissioner Mokhlesur Rahman informed that the crisis management cell would be formed for resolving the problems of the RMG sector and it is expected to start functioning within this month.
