KHULNA, Jan 25: The unloading of freight from foreign ships at the Mongla Port is hampered seriously due to crisis of cargo vehicles.
Most of the vehicles, cargo or barge, are engaged in carrying Indian goods for making extra bucks, sources said.
As a result, unloading of goods from foreign ships at the port has become difficult. In the situation, the foreign ships cannot leave the port in time and they have to pay compensation everyday.
Earlier, the Divisional River Transport Owners Association had taken a decision that no cargo ships and barges from outside Khulna would carry any goods from foreign ships at the Mongla Port.
As a result, barges and cargo ships from Barisal, Dhaka, Chittagong, and Narayanganj are not entitled to carry goods from the Mongla Port, sources said.
As the arrival of foreign ships at Mongla Port has fallen rapidly, the owners of cargo vehicles have been busy in other areas, sources added.
Most of the cargo vehicles, with a capacity from 500 to 1200 tonnes, are carrying fly-ash, fertiliser and stone from India through Angtihara under Koyra Upazila of Khulna district at higher charges.
As a result, the unloading at the Mongla Port is being hampered seriously.
In the circumstances, the port users and importers urged the authority concerned to ensure an easy unloading system by creating pressure on the River Transport Owners Association.
