Chittagong, Nov 12: Crisis of the container handling equipments at Chittagong Port is likely to continue up to June 2008. Meanwhile, the procurement of 12 straddle carriers and 6 vacant container handlers is underway, CPA sources said.
Export and import of goods in containers has increased at CP but the number of equipments required for the task has not increased proportionately. So, more container handling equipment is the need of the hour.
During the last one and a half year, only two straddle carriers and two gantry cranes were included into the stock of the equipments of CP whereas it was supposed to be well equipped with a variety of equipments. Even spare parts were not procured during the period.
With the expansion of export and import trade through containers, excess use of the limited number of equipments means those equipment are breaking down more frequently.
CP sources said the task of procuring straddle carriers and container handlers is proceeding and the crisis of equipment would be over by June next.
