CHITTAGONG, Mar 27: There is a serious crisis of housing in Chittagong city. Housing facilities on offer under both government and private initiatives are beyond the reach of the middle income group.
The skyrocketing price of land-it has gone up by 15 to 20 twenty times in the last two decades-means it is out of reach of most of the people. There has also been misuse of land due to unplanned constructions like dwelling houses, mills and factories, and business establishments. Then there is the evil of the destruction of hills in the port city which is seriously upsetting the ecological balance.
The absence of proper coordination among government, semi-government and autonomous organisations that are responsible for providing civic services and development of infrastructural facilities has also been cited for the anarchy in the housing and service sectors.
The population of the port city, which is also the commercial capital of the country, has already exceeded 4 million. With increase in the population, sufferings of the city dwellers are rising day by day.
