Crops on 136 hectares go under water in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Oct 15: Different crops on 136 hectares of land have been submerged due to the flood triggered by incessant rain in the district.
Out of the total land, crops on 43 hectares have been damaged totally, sources said.
Saplings and vegetables have also been damaged for stagnancy of the floodwater for a long time. The farmers of the district have suffered much due to crop failure.
Due to continuous heavy rains and the water coming down from the upstream, the paddy fields of Gaibandha and the ghats in the lower areas have gone under water.
Farmers are facing huge losses due to the submersion of these crops.
The submerged croplands are located in Sadar, Gobindaganj, Sundarganj, Phulchhari and Saghata and other upazilas of the district. Out of this, the crops of 43 hectares of land were completely destroyed due to waterlogging.
Crops on nine hectares have been damaged in Saghata upazila while 17 hectares in Gobindaganj, seven hectares in Phulchari, 103 hectares in Sundarganj upazilas.
Khorshed Alam, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Gaibandha, told The Financial Express that 136 hectares of crops, saplings and vegetables have been submerged due to heavy rain.
Out of this, crops on 43 hectares have been damaged totally. Incentives will be given to the farmers by listing them so that the affected farmers can plant new crops immediately after the water recedes in these crops.
