Crops set for impressive growth in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Dec 3 (Xinhua): After a decline of three consecutive years, production of paddy in Nepal is set to post sound growth this year, The Kathmandu Post reported.
According to the daily, the latest report of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) released yesterday also portrays a good picture of production for other major crops as well, indicating that the situation of food availability will improve in the country this year compared to previous years.
Preliminary estimates of major food production for 2007/08 of the MoA says the production of paddy will shoot up by an encouraging 16.8 per cent to 4.3 million tons this year from 3.68 million tons of 2006/07.
The report also notes that productivity of paddy for the year will also go up by 8.5 per cent to 2,775 kg per hectare. The total paddy production area has reached 1.55 million hectares from 1.43 million hectares last year.
Paddy contributes around 20 per cent to GDP.
According to data compiled by department of meteorology, rainfall was recorded at an average of 120.7 mm during June to September, the main rainy season this year as compared to 84 mm during the period last year.
