Crushing at state-run sugar mills begins

Natore, Oct 24 (UNB): Sugarcane crushing at the 15 state-owned sugar mills began Friday. They have a target to produce over 1.73 lakh tonnes of sugar by crushing 22.72 lakh tonnes of sugarcane during the current fiscal year.
The Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Mahbub Jamil inaugurated the sugarcane crushing programme at North Bengal Sugar Mills here in the morning, said a press release.
A meeting was held on this occasion at the mills premises and it was attended by sugarcane growers and staffs of the mills.
In his speech Mahbub Jamil said the government has raised the price of sugarcane in the current year for helping the sugarcane growers.
Terming the growers as one of the driving forces of the sugar industry he gave them assurance of providing all out cooperation for the development of the sugar industry.
Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) chairman M Mokhles-ur-Rahman, secretary M Lutfor Rahman Khan, among others, also spoke with Managing Director of North Bengal Sugar Mills Kazi Golam Mortuza in chair.
BSFIC has fixed the recovery rate at 7.62 per cent for this year.
