CSE dept at RU opens new sphere in IT education

As a second largest education institution in the country Rajshahi University (RU) has occupied a great place due to its education, research and scientific innovation and different other contributions to the nation. But, today it is not merely the second largest and leading university in Bangladesh, rather it stands as one of the largest and leading universities in this region.
The University of Rajshahi has made contributions to the enhancement of the country's store of knowledge and science, education and culture, literature and heritage. For the IT education Rajahshai University has already earned international reputation for quality education and research and accordingly established research linkages with many renowned universities and institutions of different countries of the world.
World renowned academicians, researchers and IT-professionals from home and abroad visit CSE and update the students with recent advancement in IT-technology. As a result, it is a great occasion for CSE students and fellows to get in touch of these inspiring faces of home and abroad.
The department was founded in 1993. BSc students enroll for a 4-year programme while MSc students for a year. Research in the university is conducted in specialised institutes as well as individual departments, including the Department of CSE with offering minimum two years research programme for Master of Philosophy (MPhil), minimum three years Doctoral (PhD) and professional degree: PGD in IT for one year.
Professor Md Ekramul Hamid, chairperson of the CSE department said: "The curriculum offered by our department has been designed in accordance with different renowned universities around the world. Recently with financial aid from Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) of World Bank and UGC worth 33 Million BDT, our department has been renovated to meet the highest standard of education and consequently, we now offer a world class learning experience. All of our class rooms and laboratories are equipped with modern audio-visual teaching- learning facilities. We frequently arrange workshops, seminars, academic contest of students and extra-curriculum activities. At the same time, we get our students involved in organising these events to improve their leadership quality. We want our students to be capable of not in one dimension, but capable of multi-dimensions when they graduate. As a result, now our department is the right place for the students with dreams of becoming outstanding IT professionals and researchers."  
The department has a number of ultramodern, scientific, digital and CC camera-controlled labs including own server of the department to make the students professionally skilled and face any challenge of the IT sector in both theoretically and practically. Around 250 students are studying here supervised by 25 highly experienced teachers of the department. Foreign students already have started to get admitted into the department.
The CSE department has four PC labs where there are 160 set of desktop computers Moreover, the students will find additional 25 sets laptops and 60 sets of clone desktop computers. One lab is going to be founded on 'Networking System'.
Department sources said that CSE has specialised labs for digital logic design, computer architecture and electronics. Both the undergraduate and graduate students can use these labs. These labs include Heath Kit Education System kits (Digital and Analog), K&H IDL 800A Digital Logic Training System, ETS 7000 Digital Logic Training System , Function Generator GTL 101, Function Generator GFG 8215,Oscilloscope and KENWOOD GOS 620, Digital Oscilloscope GDS 1102, GDS 1042, IC Tester GUT 6600, Sweep Function Generator SFG 2120, etc. The "Centre for Research and Innovation (CRI Unit-1)" of the department allows the students to pursue their interest to learn something new, to hone their problem-solving skills and to challenge themselves in new ways. The research work in Masters level gives them the opportunity to work closely with a mentor, the faculty member.
The department has five research groups which are based on the fields of the Signal Processing and Neuro Science, the Embedded System and Robotics, the Multimedia Processing, the Intelligent Computing and the Network Computing. Six teachers of external universities including Varenda University (VU) and North Bengal International University (NBIU) currently are doing research at the department. There is an incubator at the department for programmers which provides a calm and quiet environment with all technical facilities to get students involved in computer programming 24 hours around the clock.
The department also established Centre for Industrial Collaboration (CIC) to get students engaged in designing and developing industrial products. It provides a mean for students to apply various skills acquired from their courses throughout the academic years at the department, including project management to multi-disciplinary teamwork and design skills.
The CSE department arranges project exhibition competition with an aim to provide an opportunity for its students to engage and excel in confronting real work design problems. The students have demonstrated their creative skills every year at national level project exhibition contests and always achieved great recognition.
Kazi Jahidur Rahman, assistant professor of the department, has been elected Secretary General of the Bangladesh Computer Society (BCS). Md. Humayun Kabir, asst professor of RU CSE department, also the former student of the same department, is researching on Ad Hoc Network, Vehicular Ad Hoc Network, Wireless Sensor Network, Internet and Mobile Computing and Network Security.
Two former students of the department are now working as upper-class officers in Samsung Electronics. Of them, one was nominated as Best Employee of Samsung for two times. Teachers of the department also informed that their pre-scheduled foreign tour was turned into establishment of three specialised labs of the department. It proves there is great sacrifice and contribution of those preceptors behind the success of RU CSE department.
Akhtaruzzaman Arif, a fourth year students of the department said, "We believe, RU CSE dept is one of the world class departments in Bangladesh. Every year we take part in different contests over the world and receive several awards including in Hackathon and App Expo contest. Our experienced teachers pay their best to teach us theoretically and practically. Our seven including three fully digitalised and specialized labs give us supreme opportunities for our studies and researches. We are proud of our department."
