EVMs to be used in all centres

CHATTOGRAM, Jan 12: The by-election to Chattogram 8 constituency will be held on Monday (January 13). The constituency fell vacant following the death of Moin Uddin Khan Badal.
The Election Commission (EC) has already sent all equipments for holding the by-election.
Meanwhile, the formal campaign of the candidates has ended. A total of 475,988 voters of Chattogram 8 constituency will exercise their franchise at the by-election using electronic voting machines (EVMs).
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Abu Sufian, Awami League (AL) candidate Alhaj Moslem Uddin Ahamod, Chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Front SM Abul Kalam Azad, Bapon Das Gupta of National Awami Party (NAP), Sayed Mohammed Farid Ahamed of Islami Front and individual candidate Mohammed Emdadul Haque are contesting at the by-election. But, the main contest will be held between the candidates of ruling AL and opposition BNP.
The EC conducted mock voting through EVMs at all the 170 centres on Saturday.
Returning Officer and Chattogram Regional EC Officer Muhammed Hasanujjaman said, "EC has completed all preparations to hold the by-election at Chattogram 8 constituency. Law enforcers have already been deployed to control the law and order situation."
Polling will start at 9 am and will continue till 5 pm on Monday.
Sources in the EC said the EC declared a total of 58 centres as risky while 18 of these are highly risky. 19-member team of law enforcers will be deployed at each of the risky centres while 18 members team of law enforcers will be deployed at each of the normal centres. Besides, 14 mobile teams and six striking forces of police, Armed Police Battalion (APBN) and six mobile teams of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have also been deployed at the constituency. EC has opened a control room at a gymnasium in the port city in this regard.
The candidates of AL and BNP are confident about their victory. AL candidate Alhaj Moslem Uddin Ahamed said, "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina loves me and she assured me that she would build for us the new Kalurghat Bridge. The people of Chattogram 8 constituency will give the seat to AL for the sake of construction of new Kalurghat Bridge."
BNP candidate Abu Sufian said, "There is wave of Paddy Sheaf at the Chattogram 8 constituency. So, if the poll is held in a free and fair environment, BNP will win. Chattogram 8 constituency is the seat of BNP. BNP candidates always win the poll. So, we are hopeful about our victory."
