Ctg air, sound pollution intolerable

CHITTAGONG, July 4 (BSS):  Air and sound pollutions in the port city have reached intolerable level making city dwellers suffer from different complicated diseases.
Air pollution caused by black emission of smokes from unfit vehicles and dusts from open space results in the increase of bronchitis, asthma and respiratory related diseases among the city dwellers for years.
Besides, people of different strata in Chittagong are passing hard time tolerating sound pollution created by the hydraulic horns of different kinds of vehicles, power generators and wielding engineering workshops located in and around residential areas.
Source said the noisy environment of sound pollution affects children physically and psychologically.
Residents tried to draw the attention of the government authority concerned repeatedly but they did not pay heed to the complaints, it was alleged.
Normal living standard is being hampered due to round-the-clock operations of the power generators in different houses in the posh residential areas in the city and wielding engineering workshops.
Experts say sound pollutions have reached nearly 200 decibel (dB) against its tolerable level of 60 (dB).
Meanwhile, environmentalists said air pollution from thousands of unfit vehicles reached 100 per cent against its maximum tolerable level of hard ridge Smoke Unit (HSU) is 65 per cent.
Besides, pollution from dusts has also reached 500 plus microgram though its tolerable level is considered 200 microgram Suspended Particulates Matter (SPM), Chittagong Directorate of Environment (DOE), source said.
Detecting the reason the environmentalists said joining of smoked air created by unfit vehicles coupled with dusts from open space is causing such environmental degradation.
