CHITTAGONG, June 21: The Drainage Master Plan of Chittagong city has not yet been implemented, though a long time has elapsed by.
With losing canals and drains of the port city to unplanned urbanisation, the water-logging problem is turning from bad to worse gradually.
New areas are going under stagnant water every year causing damage to huge wealth and properties, sources said.
According to urban planners, under the implementation of the drainage master plan, a large number of canals were supposed to be excavated in the city. B]ut in practice, not a single canal has so far been excavated.
On recovery of land from grabbers, the main canals were expected to be re-excavated, but no positive step has been taken during the period.
On the other hand, an unhealthy trend of grabbing canals continues every year, the sources mentioned.
However, Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) has been able to re-excavate a good number of canals on recovery of those from unauthorised occupation.
Urban planner sources further said, besides recovery of old canals, excavation of new canals is a must for rescuing the city dwellers from the water-logging problem.
