Ctg Customs House extorts Tk 4.75m daily: TIB

Chittagong Customs House illegally realises at least Tk 4.75 million from businessmen against their export and import of products every day, according to a study by the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB). The study reveals that businessmen have to pay additional Tk 3,000 for per consignment in importing commercial products while Tk 1,300 for non-commercial (bond) products and Tk 4,000 for manual inspection of per container product. The study report, titled ‘Automation in Export-Import Process at Chittagong Port and Customs House: Governance Challenges and Way Forward’, also shows that the authorities of the Ctg Port realise at least Tk 1.72m illegally per day from the importers in releasing products. On average, 2,000 containers are released from the port every day. TIB researcher Manjur-E-Huda unveiled the findings of the study at a press conference arranged at BRAC Center Inn in the city on Monday, according to UNB.
