CHITTAGONG, Sep 8: Chittagong customs authority and joint forces seized two vast consignments of refrigerator and air conditioner (AC) that were being imported under false declaration.
There was an attempt of evading taxes up to around Tk 10 million by the importers of those consignments, sources said.
The sources said, 736 pieces of refrigerators were seized Thursday from shed no-16 of Chittagong port, as the concerned importers brought those products by concealing their actual sizes.
Importer organisation Mitsumu imported refrigerators of 6-cft and 10-cft sizes but it submitted bill of entry to the customs authority mentioning their sizes as 4-cft and 7.41-cft respectively.
On the other hand, while conducting physical verification of a consignment of 40 imported air conditioners only their outer sizes were visible and no compressor was found in any single set.
The imported consignment of small-sized air conditioners was seized, as those items were imported under false declaration mentioning each set as of 16 tonnes. But after verification none was found to be of more than 9 tonnes, the sources added.
