CHITTAGONG, Sept 28: Chittagong Customs Thursday seized 1250 tonnes of iron products of a Dhaka-based importer on charge that those were being imported under false declaration.
It is alleged that the importers were trying to bring in a huge quantity of stainless steels with the declaration that those were BP sheets.
According to the concerned sources, Aziz Steel Corporation of Dhaka recently imported 1250 tonnes of stainless steel from Japan falsely declaring these as BP sheets.
Concerned branch of Customs on receiving secret information at the time of clearing these goods, seized the stainless steel which on physical verification was found inconsistent with declaration.
Sources further said, advance taxation and payment of duties was made against these goods preserved in the shed No. 2 of Chittagong Port.
It is gathered, import price of the declared BP Sheet is around 850 US dollar per ton while approximate price of each ton of stainless steel is 1,800 dollar.
The said importer showed the entire imported consignment as BP sheet and paid their duties accordingly. As the Customs authority was informed of the matter in time the attempt to clear the 1,250 tones of steel was foiled.
