CHATTOGRAM, July 03: The Chattogram Custom House has achieved a significant milestone by collecting a record Tk 61,464.72 crore revenue in FY23.
This represents a 3.90 per cent increase compared to the previous fiscal year. While Chattogram customs still fell short of meeting its revenue target for the last fiscal year, the accomplishment marks the highest collection in recent years.
The revenue target set for Chattogram customs in FY23 was Tk 74,206 crore. However, the actual collection amounted to Tk 61,464.72 crore, surpassing the previous fiscal year's collection.
Despite the year-on-year increase in collection, the customs house was unable to meet its revenue target for FY23. It is worth mentioning that the customs house had also missed its target in the previous fiscal year (2021-22), collecting Tk 59,159.83 crore against a target of Tk 64,159.83 crore.
Commenting on the achievement, Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Custom House Md Bodruzzaman Munshi said, "The target for tax collection has been progressively increasing. Consequently, we set an ambitious revenue target of Tk 74,206 crore for the fiscal year 2022-23. I am pleased that we have collected a record-breaking amount last year."
"While the import of low-duty products, especially food items and capital machinery, has witnessed an upsurge, the import of luxury goods such as cars, cosmetics and electronics experienced a decline in the past year," he added.
Chattogram customs collects duty on imported goods which are brought in through Chattogram seaport, which handles around 92 per cent of the country's external trades.
Apart from the premier seaport of Bangladesh, the customs house also collects duties on goods coming through the port city's Shah Amanat International Airport.
