After four months of trial runs, toll collection on the expressway starts today.
Sources said tolls for both entry and exit would initially be collected at four booths at the Patenga end. The Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) plans to expand toll collection to 10 booths once additional ramps are constructed.
The toll rates approved on November 27, 2023 are: Tk 30 for a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, Tk 80 for a car, Tk 70-100 for a jeep, Tk 100 for a microbus, Tk 150 for a pickup, Tk 200 for a minibus, Tk 280 for a bus, Tk 200 for a four-wheeler truck, Tk 300 for a six-wheeler truck, and Tk 450 for a covered van.
Motorcycles and trailers are banned on the expressway.
CDA Chairman Engineer Md Nurul Karim told The Financial Express all preparations for toll collection are completed. "Toll collection will start on Friday as per the ministry's instructions. The ministry has already approved the toll rates. Besides, toll plazas have been set up at exit points."
Md Mahfuzur Rahman, director of the project and also the CDA executive engineer, said the CDA board at a meeting on October 28 last year proposed opening the expressway to traffic and the ministry approved it.
Inaugurated by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in November 2023, the 16.5km expressway's trial operations began in September last year.
The project was scheduled to be completed in 2022, but the implementing agency, CDA, requested an extension till 2024. The cost also increased by over Tk 1,200 crore.
