Monday, 16 July 2007

Chittagong Mohammedan SC caused a major upset as they came from behind to beat giant Brothers Union Club by 2-1 goals in the second phase of the B League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city Sunday, reports UNB.
With this win, Chittagong Mohammedan SC not only improved their position in the league table with 21 points from 17 matches, but also took a sweet revenge of their 1-0 defeat in the first phase. Brothers Union Club remained at 23 points from 17 outings.
In the day's match, substitutes Rashed Alam Dipu and Kamrul Islam Pavel scored for the winners while Nigerian recruit Elijah Obagbemiro Junior for the losers.
After a barren first half, Junior put the 'all orange' Gopibagh outfit ahead in the 46th minute by a right-footer from inside the D-box after dodging past an opponent defender utilizing a right side Jalal cross (1-0).
Dipu restored parity for the 'black & white' port city outfit in the 70th minute by a placing shot from inside the danger zone as Brothers Union custodian Mohammad Ali ran forward in a vain attempt to clear the ball (1-1).
Pavel scored the match-winning goal for Chittagong Mohammedan in the 87th minute by an angular shot from inside the D-box capitalizing on a right wing Asif pass (1-2).
Chittagong Mohammedan got only two real chances during the entire proceedings and converted both into goals while Brothers Union missed several chances.
Brothers Union came close to score in the 24th minute, but a Mamun shot off a Jalal close pass was saved superbly by custodian Rashed Chowdhury Razu for corner.
Razu again foiled a Brothers Union attempt in the 29th minute as he fisted away Junior's powerful shot from inside the danger zone at the cost of corner.
Brothers Union had a chance to level the margin in the 90th minute, but this time substitute custodian Tito brilliantly saved a goal-bound free kick by Junior from around 25 yards for corner.
