OUR CORRESPONDENT | Saturday, 7 September 2024

The executive members of the Police Plaza Merchant Association in Chattogram resigned after traders of the association alleged that its president ARM Shamim Uddin misappropriated Tk 24 million.
Accepting the allegations against him, Shamim Uddin also submitted his resignation and said he deposited the money as fixed deposit receipts (FDR) in his name illegally, and he would return the money.
Traders alleged that Shamim Uddin, the brother of city Awami League's secretary AZM Nasir Uddin, held the committee hostage without any election for the last 12 years and misappropriated money of the businessmen and association.
They have also demanded that Nasir Uddin is arrested and an investigation is opened against him by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
The traders held a rally at the Police Plaza premises and said that Nasir Uddin, Shamim Uddin, and his family members directly resisted the Anti Discrimination Student Movement at the GEC Convention Center.
Shamim Uddin allegedly provided money and shelter to the attackers. The joint forces are yet to arrest him.
