CHATTOGRAM, July 05: The Chittagong port would soon install two more Quay Gantry Cranes (QGC) as these arrived here on Sunday to facilitate smooth operation of the country's main seaport.
With these two, the port will have a total of 18 QGCs.
Besides, three Rubber-Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGCs) procured from China have arrived at the port.
Under the Chittagong Port Authority's (CPA) procurement plan for a total of 104 new equipment to modernise the port, 16 have already reached the port.
CPA Chief Engineer (Mechanical) Mohammed Aminul Islam said that all the operational berths of the port now have the QGCs.
CPA Secretary Omar Faruk confirmed the arrival of the key gantry cranes and said that the ship carrying the newly procured 2 QGCs and 3 RTGs from China was taken to the NCT- 5 jetty on special arrangements.
"After unloading, the cranes will be installed and tested by experts, and then these will come into operation as soon as possible," he added.
He expected that the container handling activities of the port will get faster and safer once the newly procured cranes come in operation.
Earlier, on May 07 this year, two QGCs and three RTGCs were added to the port. In addition, there are four QGCs in operation at Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT) and 12 others in the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of the port. Two new QGCs will be installed in the NCT-5 berth.
On the other hand, the port had a total of 42 RTGCs and the three new RTGs are likely to be added to the Reefer Yard operations.
