CHITTAGONG, Mar 20 (BSS): The country's premier seaport, Chittagong Port, will be turned into a world-standard digitalised port by this year.
Chittagong Port Authority sources said the port will be brought under full computer network as part of digitalisation under Chittagong Port Trade Facilitation Umbrella Project. The Tk 2.25 billion (225 crore) project will be implemented with the financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
"To this end, all activities including submission of bill of entry for export-import and the process for imposing duty of the Chittagong Customs House, the main source of the country's revenue income, have already been brought under automation," the sources said.
Of them, the work for implementation of two projects--- the Port Management Information System (PMIS) and the Container Terminal Management System (CTMS)---is nearing completion.
The projects are being executed to make other operational activities, including administrative management, goods handling of ships and scanning of goods delivery of the port, technology, dependent under these projects.
In this regard, Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Commodore RU Ahmed said to turn the Chittagong Port into a world- standard port, all its activities are being computerised, making the activities dependent on modern equipment by changing the traditional operational system and administrative management of the century- old port in line with the present government's vision to build 'Digital Bangladesh'.
Besides increasing efficiency of the port's activities, he said, a revolutionary change will take place in container handling through unloading and delivery of containers within the shortest possible time if the CTMS Project is implemented.
"As a result, the port will go one step forward in fulfilling the commitments of the Prime Minister to building Digital Bangladesh," he hoped.
The CPA chairman also said 10 more gantry cranes would be added to make Newmooring Container Terminal (NCT) operational. Apart from this, a decision had been taken to construct Karnaphuli Container Terminal at the place of old jetty Nos. 11, 12 and 13 and the process for buying heavy machinery at a cost of Tk 2.50 billion (250 crore) was on.
He said the CPA has taken initiatives for container terminal management through digital system under the digital cluster projects. "Medical section, land section and personnel management of the port have already been digitalised and training is being given to its manpower for removing irregularities, inefficiency and complexities."
