Ctg port to introduce system to keep jetties ready for berthing vessels on scheduled arrival

Saturday, 4 August 2007

FE Report
The country's premier Chittagong seaport is going to introduce 'window berthing system' for the first time from August 6 to maintain an international standard of keeping berths reserved for particular vessels.
Under the system, the port authority will keep their jetties free and ready for berthing vessels on their scheduled arrival.
Port sources said this will remove overstay of feeder vessels and expedite the cargo handling to a great extent.
This will felicitate the country's external trade as businessmen will be able to deal with their export-import cargoes in time, which is currently uncertain.
The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), however, has brought four feeder lines operating to and from Chittagong port and other ports in Singapore, Malaysia and Colombo under the new system.
The feeder operators are PIL, OEL, HRC and Seacon.
The PIL will get two windows (berthing schedules) and the others, one each in a week.
Sources said the CPA will inaugurate the new system by receiving the vessel of the PIL at NCT- 2 Monday next.
CPA Chairman Commodore M Farooque, feeder operators and others will present at the inauguration ceremony.
Country director of the PIL Captain Mohammed Rafique told the FE that his line would give shippers and others two windows each for a period of six months.
He said the feeder vessels will arrive and sail out on a particular day in a week under the system.
He also said exporters and importers will be able to make plan for shipment accordingly to save time and money.
