CHATTOGRAM, June 22: Cost and time of the project to construct the Coastal Road, popularly known as Ring Road, have been extended again.
The road construction was almost completed. But, the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) is going to construct a junction and some other components. As a result, the project cost and time have been increased.
The CDA officials have said according to the new design, the project cost has increased by Tk 6.48 billion. Besides, the schedule to end the project has been extended to June next year. Earlier, the schedule was extended thrice.
Kazi Hasan Bin Shams, the project director and CDA chief engineer, said, "More than 95 per cent work of the Ring Road has already been completed. Meanwhile, we have changed its design, considering the connectivity of the Mirerswari Economic Zone (MEZ). Now, we are extending the Ring Road from Bhatiari to the MEZ. The work to extend the road is continuing now."
"We proposed to increase the project cost for lighting, connecting road with the Chattogram Export Processing Zone (CEPZ), and constructing a junction and intersection for the Bangabandhu Tunnel."
"The ECNEC has already increased allocation by Tk 6.48 billion for the project. Besides, the time schedule to end the project has also been extended to June 2024."
"The number of vehicles in the port-city is increasing by 10-15 per cent every year. So, we have to construct junction to reduce traffic jam. Besides, we have to construct flyover and underpass to connect the Ring Road with the CEPZ," he added.
"The Ring Road was scheduled to end at Rashmoni Ghat of Foujdarhat, and the work is almost completed. But, we have decided to extend the road to MEZ, considering future communication. So, we have changed its design, and are working as per the new design. I hope it will create a new era of communication," he added.
CDA Chairman M Zahirul Alam Dubash said, "The Roads and Highways Department requested the CDA to construct a platform point at the junction of the Bangabandhu Tunnel and the Ring Road at Patenga."
"After ending the tunnel construction work, we have made a platform junction at Patenga to move vehicles from the Ring Road to the tunnel."
It may be mentioned that the CDA implemented the Coastal Road Construction and Embankment Strengthening Project, also known as Chattogram Outer Ring Road Project at a cost of Tk 14.96 billion.
Under the project, a 15.2-km road is constructed on the existing coastal embankment connecting Patenga to Sagorika Industrial Area. The road has strengthened the coastal embankment and increased its height from 23-24 feet to 33-34 feet.
