Ctg roads named after language martyrs, BDR victims

CHITTAGONG, Mar 8: Six roads in the port city have been named after the martyrs of 1952 Language Movement and army officers of the BDR Peelkhana carnage of 2009. The roads around the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup Cricket Venue Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong have been named after four valiant Language Movement heroes -- Rafiq, Jabbar, Salam and Barkat and Colonel Shawkat Imam and Lt Colonel Enshad Amin, martyrs of the BDR Carnage. Three roads have been newly constructed while others have been renovated following the ICC's declaration of the Divisional Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium as World Cup cricket venue. The Fouzderhat BSCIC Industrial Area - Kattali Road has been named as Shahid Salam Road, City Corporation Store - North Road as Shahid Barkat Road, Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium - Sen Bari as Shahid Rafiq Road, Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium - Westward Road as Shahid Jabbar Road, Foilyatali Bazar - Russel Vegetable attached road as Shahid Col Shawkat Imam Road and Alankar Square - Shahid Barkat connection road as Shahid Lt Col Enshad Amin Road. City Corporation mayor M Manjur Alam in a formal ceremony opened the roads named after Language Movement heroes Monday afternoon. Col Imam's father Saidur Rahman inaugurated the Shahid Col Shawkat Imam Road and Col Enshad's mother and renowned writer Mrs Fahmida Amin inaugurated the Shahid Lt Col Enshad Amin Road. City Mayor said he was happy to have completed construction and renovation of the roads in time according to decisions taken in the general meeting of the CCC councilors. Some other roads in the city will be named after freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives in the Liberation War of 1971. Fahmida Amin and Saidur Rahman termed it as a rare example set by the CCC. They expressed their gratitude to the city people and the mayor for naming city roads in memory of their sons. Mrs Fahmida Amin said her son wanted to publish a book commemorating the writer but today she was very unfortunate to have published a book on the life and sad demise of her son.
