CHATTOGRAM, Apr 28: Transport owners in Chattogram called off their 48-hour strike on Sunday afternoon after a meeting with district administration officials.
"Considering public interest at the request of the honorable district administrator, we have ended the 48-hour ongoing strike. We thank the district administrator for accepting our demands," said Manjur Alam Chowdhury, convener of Greater Chattogram Public Transport Owners and Workers Unity Council, reported UNB.
The announcement came as commuters in port city faced daylong transportation woes since Sunday morning amid the punishing heat.
The strike brought public transport in the port city to a standstill. Buses were not leaving from Chattogram to Cox's Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachari districts, nor were they coming from those districts to Chattogram.
Bus services to the capital Dhaka was also halted.
The scorching heatwave exacerbated the situation for passengers stranded at bus counters, especially those travelling between Dhaka and Cox's Bazar or Bandarban.
The strike followed student protests at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) over the deaths of two pupils in a bus-motorcycle collision.
Transport owners, under the banner of the Greater Chattogram Public Transport Owners and Workers Unity Council, demanded the release of arrested linemen and transport workers, as well as a halt to government raids targeting unfit vehicles.
