CHITTAGONG, Jul 10: Although the Chittagong WASA collected a record amount of revenue-about Tk 420 million in fiscal 2006-2007-it had failed to enhance its water drilling capacity in the previous years.
The revenue earnings made in the last fiscal was about Tk 30 million more than that of 2005-2006 and regarded as the highest revenue income of Chittagong WASA in its history, sources said.
Since the taking over of the additional charge of Chittagong WASA by Chittagong Port Magistrate Mohammad Munir Chowdhury, the revenue collection of Chittagong WASA, including the outstanding ones, began rising.
On the other hand it is regrettable that Chittagong WASA miserably failed to enhance its water drilling capacity.
Chittagong WASA was established in 1963. Prior to that, the responsibility of supplying water was assigned to the then Chittagong Municipality and Public Health Engineering Department.
Sources said the water drilling capacity of Chittagong WASA was less than 30,000 gallons at the beginning and the number of water connections was 1369.
Later, while water generation capacity of C-WASA increased with the passage of time, the number of its subscribers also increased.
The water drilling capacity of Chittagong WASA rose to around 37.5 million gallons until 1986. Since then it could not enhance its water drilling capacity further.
According to sources, although the number of subscribers increased to 42,400, the possibility of enhancing water generation in future is still bleak.
