CHITTAGONG, Mar 17: To ensure safe water for the people, Chittagong WASA has undertaken more than half a dozen major and medium projects worth about Tk 30860 million for implementation by 2015. Authorities expect that the projects, if implemented, will meet 98 per cent of the total demand of water in the city by providing 571 million litres per day against the total demand that may stand around 580 million litre per day by that time. Currently the CWASA (Chittagong Water and Sewerage Authority) supplies 210 million litres of water a day, around 42 per cent, against the existing demand of 500 million litres, authorities said. Of the 210 million litres, CWASA is getting 90 million litres from Mohara Water Treatment Plant while the rest 120 million litres are coming from 85 deep tubewells sunk around the city by CWASA decades back. The major ongoing project, as put forth by the managing director of CWASA AKM Fazlullah, is the revised Karnafuli Water Supply Project for producing 136 million litres of water a day at an estimated cost of Tk 15,100 million with financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Bangladesh Government. He said although the project is scheduled to be completed by 2013 it will take some more time as the revised project is yet to get approval of the government. Mr Fazlullah was briefing the media about ongoing water production, rehabilitation and recovery of supply capacity projects and a number of future long and short-term ones at the CWASA conference room this morning. Some major projects are being implemented under co-financing of Japan, Korea and Government of Bangladesh (GoB), he said. The CWASA has been implementing a project for non-revenue water (NRW) reduction since 2009 with the financial assistance of JICA to lessen the systems loss to 25 per cent from the existing 30 per cent, he said. Under the initiative, the authority will detect water leakage, water theft, non-installation of water meter, wrong measurement of water meter, incomplete billing system and public used street hydrants, the WASA MD added. The press conference was attended, among others, by the JICA team leader, Project Director Nazrul Huq, WASA DMD (Deputy Managing Director) Abdul Awal, ATM Mamunur Rashid, Syed Tauhidur Rahman, Nanda Dulal Banik and M Shafiullah.
