CHITTAGONG, August 12: Trial run of Container Terminal Management System (CTMS) in the Chittagong Port has been deferred by about one month on the request of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) said the 'go-live' of the automatic system will now take place on September 11 and 14 instead of August 14 and 17, as scheduled earlier, following request from the RMG (ready-made garment) exporters. When the CTMS will be fully commissioned, berthing of the vessels calling the port will be automated through a software system. Besides, the turn around time of the vessels will reduce, resulting the best berth productivity and occupancy, the CPA officials said. The RMG exporters asked the CPA to defer the date, as they were concerned of facing problems in complying with the cut-off time during the trial run of the CTMS during Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr. "As the RMG manufacturers are under pressure in exporting their products ahead of the upcoming Eid, they requested to defer the 'go-live' of the CTMS by one month," said a senior official of the CPA. He said all preparations were afoot for holding the trial run of the CTMS automatic system on August 14 and 17. After one month's trial run the system was scheduled to be formally opened by the Prime Minister in the middle of September. As per the revised schedule cargo handling in the port will be partially disrupted for 48 hours in two phases. Importers, exporters, C and F agents, shipping and others concerned with the port's cargo handling activities have been asked to suspend container handling and berthing of containerised vessels from 8.00 am of September 10 to 8.00 am of September 11 at the CCT (Chittagong Container Terminal) and NCT (New Mooring Container Terminal), and from 8.00 am of September 13 to 8.00 am of September 14 at the GCB (general cargo berths) in the jetties. Feeder operators have been requested to send pre-advise of their export containers to the CTMS system through EDI before 48 hours. The CPA officials said the system, if implemented, will enhance productivity of the yards, as the container stacking will be done according to geographical location. It will also reduce the waiting time of vessels and utilise the handling equipments in a planned way.
