CU BCL faction postpones strike for 2 days

CHITTAGONG, Jan 3 (UNB) : Hours after its enforcement, a faction of the Chittagong University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Saturday postponed its indefinite strike on the campus for Sunday and Monday on the occasion of Eid-e-Miladunnabi and 'Victory Day of Democracy'.
Ariful Islam, former organising secretary of CU BCL, said they postponed the strike in observance of the two days. Eid-e-Miladunnabi, the day of birth of and demise of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh), will be observed across the country on Sunday while the ruling Awami League will celebrate January 5 as the 'Victory Day of Democracy' marking the one year of the January-5 election. Ariful said the strike will continue from Tuesday if the administration does not concede to their demands. Earlier in the morning, the BCL faction enforced the indefinite strike on the campus to press for its six-point demand.
The demands include withdrawal of the 'false cases' filed against the leaders and activists of the faction and the arrest of the killers of Taposh Sarker, an activist of the university unit of the ruling party's student wing.
The Varsity Express (VEx) group, said to be backed by the university administration, made the announcement of the strike on Friday evening. The faction on December 17 had issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the authorities to meet the demands.
But the university administration failed to meet the demands within the deadline.
