CHITTAGONG, May 16 (UNB): Police detained 16 students in raids at Chittagong University (CU) dormitories early Saturday following campus violence.
Campus sources said police raided six male dormitories from 11:00 pm Friday to 5:30 am Saturday and picked up 16 students for not having identity cards.
Later, they were taken to local police station for interrogation.
The raids were carried out to maintain law and order as Chhatra League activists clashed with Islami Chhatra Shibir men Thursday night that forced the authorities to postpone all the classes and examinations of the varsity until May 21.
The feuding student groups launched vandalism on the campus during the clash that also left at least 25 students injured.
The clash broke out over alleged political use of the mosque of Shaheed Abdur Rab Hall by Shibir activists.
A four-member probe committee, headed by Professor Dr M Kamal Hossain, was formed in this connection.
