Cucumber brings a small farmer good fortune

JOYPURHAT, May 15: When the petty farmers of Joypurhat are disheartened with crops cultivation short of capital and others supports, then Nazrul Islam, a farmer of Teghorbisha village under Sadar Upazila in the district, has made himself successful by cultivating cucumber. He was a small farmer of this area but now he has become a model farmer to all. Nazrul Islam cultivated hybrid Alavi35 and Kashinda cucumber on his 2 bighas of land in February this year. He has already sold over 300 maunds of cucumber and earned Tk 80 to 85 thousand not counting production and others costs. In running and next month he expects to earn Tk 30-40 thousand from his land. Nazrul Islam told to this correspondent that since he was a small farmer, he cultivated only on 2 bighas of land with by agri-loan from Rajshahi Krishi Unnayn Bank(RAKUB) Joypurhat branch and technical advice of Joypurhat DAE office. Lalteer Seed Company helped him by giving their hybrid Alavi35 cucumber seed. Within a short time he got good production and good price of his crop. Following Nazrul Islam, some of small and big farmers of the area have come forward to cultivate this crop. Farmer Azhar Ali of the same village, Shamsul Islam from Aowshgara village said that Nazrul Islam's success inspired them to invest in cucumber cultivation. Shamim Iqbal, Joypurhat Sadar Upazila DAE officer and Azharul Islam, marketing officer of Lalteer Seed Company said that Nazrul Islam, a self-made farmer, has now become a model farmer to all in the upazila. Seven thieves rounded up Another message adds: Joypurhat thana police arrested 7 thieves from the town in a drive Saturday night. The police sources said that night in the drive by Sadar Thana police headed by Sub-inspector Sajedur Rahman and Asaduzzaman Asad arrested 7 thieves with stolen goods as computer, stabiliser and electricity cables etc. The police said that from some days electric cable and computers were being sold from various area in the town. So they operated a drive in the town to arrest the thieves. At first they arrested a thief Milon and according to his information police to arrested the other thieves and recovered those goods. German aid to hospital Another message adds: A German aid organisation CAP Amanur gave 700 vials of insulin to Joypurhat Diabetes Hospital Sunday. At that time this hospital also received other medicines from the organisation. Country Co-ordinator Jurgen Mall and Public Health Officer Sajib Hossain of the organisation handed over those medicines. In the medicine giving time Abdul Aziz Mollah, president of Joypurhat Diabetes Samity and Poura Mayor Ahsan Habib, Sabu Chowdhury, Secretary of JDS and Finance Secretary of JDS were present. The aid organisation sources said they will provide all equipment to the hospital for better treatment.
