Cucumber prices up, fish down

Prices of a few fish species went down while vegetable prices showed a mixed trend in last seven days, according to traders of the city's kitchen markets.
Brinjal prices reduced slightly maintaining the higher range.
Fish prices, specially river and sea varieties, saw a slight reduction in a week after a sharp rise at the beginning of Ramadan.
Prices of farm fish varieties like pangas, koi and tilapia's were static on Friday compared with those of its previous, traders said.
Hilsa, shrimp, tengra, golsha, kachki, shing, magur fish prices witnessed a 20-30 per cent increase from the beginning of the fasting month.
Shrimp was sold at Tk850-900 (big sized), Tk600-650 (medium) and Tk450-500 (small) per kg on Friday---Tk50-100 reduction at per kg in a week.
Golsha was sold at Tk600-650 per kg, tengra at Tk400-600, magur and shing at Tk500-550 (small), Tk600-650 (big) per kg on the day---a Tk40-50 reduction in last seven days.
Hilsa prices increased by nearly by20-25 per cent with the beginning of Ramadan compared with normal days which started to reduce again.
A medium sized (650gram -800 gram) hilsa was sold at Tk600-650 on Friday---Tk100 reduction compared to that of its previous, Md Taslim, a retailer at Nowabganjbazar in the city said.
He said the availability of big sized (900 gram+) hilsa was scarce in the city kitchen markets.
Price of small sized (below 600 gram) fish was sold at Tk300-400, a Tk40-50 decrease at per piece in a week, Md Taslim said.
"Hilsa prices increased because of hype of Ramadan coupled with scarcity of the national fish in rivers and sea. The price is now decreasing as fishermen have now started getting fish," Doulat Ali, a trader at Sowarighat in the city said.
However, hilsa yield was a record 0.4.5 million tonnes in FY'14, the state-run Department of Fisheries said.
Brinjal prices, which rose a record high of Tk110-130 per kg last week, reduced slightly as the long variety and Ausha variety of brinjals, suitable for making fried item 'Beguni' sold at Tk80-100 per kg across the city on Friday.
Other varieties were sold at Tk50-70 per kg in the kitchen markets---Tk10 decrease in a week.
Cucumber prices increased while onion prices slightly reduced on the day compared with those of its previous.
Cucumber was selling at Tk55-60 (local) and Tk45-50 (hybrid) per kg.
Okra and pointed gourd prices reduced by Tk4-5 per kg and were sold at Tk35-40 per kg on Friday.
Onion was sold at Tk40-42 (local) and Tk35-40 (imported) per kg on the day.
Prices of other commodities remained static on Friday compared to those of the previous week.
