Cultivation in sandy fallow lands attracts farmers in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Nov 12 (BSS): The cultivation in the sandy fallow lands in the newly reclaimed char areas of the district is getting attractive to the farmers day by day.
The cultivators of the area are getting additional crops from those lands.
This correspondent when visited the vast char areas of Harirampur and Daulatpur Upazila of the district observed that the sandy lands of the area are being prepared for sowing pulse, palmistry and ground nuts and red potatoes.
Cultivators said they have started farming in the sandy fallow lands experimentally.
The vast lands devoured by erosion have now reclaimed from the river as big char on the other side of the river Padma which is now totally separated from the upazila headquarters.
The cultivators said the lands that have reclaimed from the river are suitable for cultivation of rice and jute.
But the newly reclaimed lands are remaining fallow as those are sandy. They have cultivated the lands and are expecting a good harvest in the current season.
In the summer season the farmers will sow sesame and kawn in the sandy lands and will plant local variety of Boro.
Same is the condition of lands of the vast char areas of Daulatpur upazila which have been separated by another big river Jamuna.
The char areas of Baghutia and Bachamara unions of Daulatpur upazila are now suitable for growing pulse and ground nuts.
This year about 30 hectares of land have been brought under ground nut seed cultivation experimentally, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said.
